Scams!

Recently there has been numerous reports of international scams cheating greedy people on getting rich quick but end up they lose hundreds of thousands to these fraudsters. They purportedly make phone calls from countries such as Hong Kong to their victims in Malaysia to reveal their personal information as well as bank in their money as security deposits in order to win prizes. However, after making the deposit, the fraudsters were never heard of anymore.

A man by the name of Mr. Tee managed to record the following telephone conversations (in Mandarin) of such scams and published them in YouTube.

Watch your kids while in the cinema

Many parents bring their kids to the cinema to catch the animated movies such as Happy Feet, Shrek, etc. While these animated movies are fun and attracted children, many teenagers and adults also watch them, myself included. The cinema is a place where one relaxes and enjoy the show, however, certain irresponsible parents would spoil the excitement when they fail to control their kids while the movie is on.

Yesterday, while I was watching Surf’s Up at GSC 1 Utama, Hall 7, 12pm screening, there is a couple with a bunch of kids who sit scaterred around as they fail to get seats in a row. The annoying thing is, the parents allow their kids to run around the auditorium, pushing my seat as well as other customers, sitting on the floor, etc. During the near 2 hour show, i was so annoyed by the kicking of the seat by the children. Many times I turned to the back, twice I scolded, but the parents just ignored and still allow their kids to do that. Damn annoying!

These people should be taught to be civic-minded and to discipline their kids while in the cinema. Otherwise, I won’t be surprise to see in future when these kids grow up, they will be trouble makers in the cinema like the Tai Ko featured in the DiGi PSA who talks so loudly over the phone while the movie is on.

Jalan Universiti: Much more to be done

The new 4-lane flyover across the former Dato’ Abu Bakar roundabout has just been opened to traffic some 2 weeks ago. The roundabout is no longer exists, it has been replaced with traffic lights intersection under the flyover. Traffic at this intersection has improved a lot.

However, much more actions are needed for the entire stretch of Jalan Universiti from the Rothmans roundabout to the interchange at Federal Highway Route 2. Traffic heading towards the Federal Highway is still very much congested due to the traffic lights into Universiti Malaya (UM), Section 11 and Universiti Malaya Medical Center (UMMC). The situation is made worst by irresponsible drivers who park beside the road outside UMMC instead of the parking facilities available in the hospital.

One way to solve the problem is to build more flyovers across these junctions, however that may be costly. Alternatively, there should be no right turn along this stretch, but to be replaced with dedicated U-turn lanes at strategic locations along the road, allowing traffic to turn in and out of UM, UMMC and Section 11.

At the other end, the Rothmans roundabout connecting Jalan Universiti, Jalan Semangat, Jalan Harapan and Jalan 19/1, traffic can be very bad during peak hours, especially on Tuesday evenings due to the pasar malam in Section 17. There has been plan to build a flyover connecting Jalan Semangat to Jalan Harapan, but, as long as Jalan Harapan remains a short stretch till Jalan 17/21B, there is no point building the flyover. The city council should build the 20-year-delayed Jalan Harapan project while at the same time build the proposed flyover to better disperse traffic around this area, given that new residential and commercial developments are coming up in Section 19, adjacent to Section SS2.

Culprits of severe traffic congestion on the North-South Expressway

Each time, traffic slows down on the North-South Expressway (NSE) as well as other expressways, either due to lane closure, vehicles changing lanes due to heavy vehicles crawling up a slope, many irresponsible drivers use the emergency lane only to cut into the main traffic lanes later, causing traffic to be severely congested.

Just last Sunday evening, while traveling back from Melaka to Petaling Jaya for a weekend trip, I spotted many vehicles, heavy ones included using the emergency lane along the stretch between Pedas-Linggi and Senawang on the NSE. It is due to the closure of one of the two lanes at one point, and impatient drivers started to use the emergency lane and the yet-to-be-opened third lane, resulting in vehicles from 4 lanes squeezing into one lane which caused a traffic congestion of several kilometres.

Here are some photographs of the culprits.
