PUTRAJAYA: The speed limit on federal and state roads will be reduced from 90kph to 80kph for 36 days effective Oct 6.

On Oct 10, 11, 12, 20 and 21, heavy vehicles will be banned from all roads with exception given to lorries transporting essential goods and providing critical services.

These are among the measures the authorities will implement to improve road safety and reduce accidents and fatalities during the Hari Raya holidays.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Douglas Unggah Embas said the lower speed limit would be enforced from Oct 6 to Nov 12.

The speed limit of 110kph along expressways remains.

“With the traffic volume expected to increase three-fold during the festive period, the authorities are taking all measures to ensure that those going home can travel in a more conducive manner,” he said.

“We are doing all we can so that motorists can reach their destinations safely but we also hope they play their part by being more responsible on the road.”

He said the police, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board would carry out selective enforcement during the period.

“The JPJ will mobilise 1,200 personnel (members) for duty during the festive period to check express, tour and stage buses.

“The officers will also be checking the drivers to ensure they have all the permits and licences,” he said.

He said officers would also ensure that bus drivers are on duty for only eight hours a day and be given rest after every four hours of driving.
