Unofficial results at the time of this writing indicates that Barisan Nasional (BN) has formed the new federal government but without a 2/3 majority. Besides failing in their attempt to wrest Kelantan state government from PAS, BN also lost the states of Kedah, Penang, Selangor, and might be losing Perak too.
In Kedah, PAS will lead the new state government while in Penang, DAP Secretary-General, Lim Guan Eng will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister. It is also reported that Khalid Ibrahim of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has been named as the new Menteri Besar of Selangor.
Presidents of three out of the five BN component parties based in Peninsular Malaysia, S. Samy Vellu (MIC), Koh Tsu Koon (Gerakan) and M. Kayveas (PPP) lost in Sungai Siput, Batu Kawan and Taiping parliamentary constituencies respectively. Other casualties include MIC Deputy President G. Palanivel (Hulu Selangor), Gerakan Youth Chief Mah Siew Keong (Telok Intan) and MCA Vice President Donald Lim (PJ Selatan).
Notable DAP MPs elected to the 12th Parliament include Lim Kit Siang (Ipoh Timur), Karpal Singh (Bukit Gelugor), Lim Guan Eng (Bagan), M. Kulasegaran (Ipoh Barat), M. Manogaran (Telok Intan), Dr. P. Ramasamy (Batu Kawan), Fong Po Kuan (Batu Gajah) and Fong Kui Lun (Bukit Bintang).
Teresa Kok of DAP won the Seputeh parliamentary seat with a majority of over 36,000 while newcomer Tony Pua is elected to the PJ Utara parliamentary seat with a majority of over 19,000. Popular blogger Jeff Ooi also won the Jelutong parliamentary seat.
PKR and PAS made inroads into many parliamentary and state seats. Notable victories include Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (Permatang Pauh), Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (Bandar Tun Razak), Tian Chua (Batu), Nurul Izzah (Lembah Pantai), Dr. Michael Jeyakumar (Sungai Siput), Wee Choo Keong (Wangsa Maju), Hee Loy Sian (PJ Selatan) and Lingam video maker Loh Gwo-Burne (Kelana Jaya).
