The Islamic Institute of Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) and Syariah Judiciary Department Malaysia have proposed that non-Muslims caught in khalwat (close proximity) shall be sentenced, perhaps in civil courts since non-Muslims are not subjected to syariah law. The reason: To be fair to both parties!

Such a proposal is therefore against the constitution where the freedom of religion is enshrined. Khalwat is not an offence for non-Muslims, and is not an offence in the civil law. The proposal might implies that they are trying to introduce syariah law in civil courts! Article 121(A) of the Federal Constitution clearly separates the civil courts from the syariah courts!

The recent political tsunami has shown that the people rejects religious extremism, among others! Have these people learnt from it?
