Various newspapers today carried the news item that MCA slams PAS on their goal to implement hudud laws in Malaysia. A portion of the news item says:
“Once PAS is strong, it will amend the Federal Constitution to implement hudud laws. Their partners in the coalition should openly declare their stand on the statement,” he (Ong Ka Ting) said after chairing the party presidential council meeting at Wisma MCA here yesterday.
Ong was asked to comment on a Chinese daily’s front-page story on a statement by PAS deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din on the Harakah website.
Apparently, the story on Harakah website is just actually a reply to a question posted by a reader.
The question:
Apakah apabila PAS menjadi pemerintah sesebuah negeri, undang-undang hudud Islam menjadi keutamaan? Wajib disegerakankah atau pun bukan keutamaan. Jika bukan, apa pula keutamaan PAS dalam pemerintahannya. Mohon Dato’ perjelaskan. - Ubaidah Salim, Sepang
Part of the reply by Haron:
Kita perlu bersabar sehingga Kerajaan Pusat dikuasai oleh PAS sehingga Perlembagaan Persekutuan dapat diubah, maka barulah ia menjadi keutamaan.
While making Malaysia an Islamic state by implementing hudud laws is PAS goal, the question now is, is it possible that PAS takes control, for this matter, a 2/3 majority in Parliament, of the Federal Government?
Now, come back to the facts. In the recent election, PAS did not even contest all seats in Parliament. In fact, they only contested about 60 seats and won only 23. Even if PAS wins all the seats they contested, they cannot amend the Federal Constitution to implement hudud laws!
So what if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) wins the next General Election with a 2/3 majority? Several PAS leaders have clarified that Islamic state is NOT an agenda of PR. For that matter, if PR forms the federal government with 2/3 majority, PAS itself does not have 2/3. So, they cannot turn Malaysia into an Islamic state!
There is no issue about Islamic state as it is impossible that PAS will take control of the Federal Government. It has been a month since the elections. It’s time to work together, be they the government or opposition to make Malaysia a better place! As for BN parties, stop all these and accept defeat with grace!
