Perak state executive councillor A Sivanesan said the state government wants the Internal Security Act (ISA) detention camp in Kamunting, Perak to be moved out of the state, according to The Star.
“Pakatan is against the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the camp is in Kamunting, Taiping, Perak,” he said.
Although he had yet to bring up the matter to the state executive councillor meeting, Sivanesan said the state government will look into the legal avenue and land legislations on how the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government can order the Federal Government to move the camp out of the current location.
“If they (Barisan) are not going to abolish the ISA, then move out the camp and give us back the land.”
On 23 September, Penang Chief Minister & DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng suggested that the Perak state governemnt acquire the land in Kamunting where the ISA detention camp is located as a start to end the draconian ISA.
“The state can acquire land for two reasons; economic development and for public purposes, but we have to study the law first,” Lim told the Abolish ISA forum held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
In April, Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin noted that the ISA detention camp was in Kamunting, Perak, and as the new Mentri Besar he had to answer to the families of the detainees.
Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zaid Ibrahim who wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister may leave Umno, according to this New Straits Times report.
His reason: There is no future for him in Umno.
“I have given 20 years of my political life (to Umno) and I have got into a lot of difficulties because of my views and not that I was disloyal.”
“I have always had different views on many things previously and today.”
“I have been suspended from the party for nothing and now disqualified from running for (the Kota Baru) division election.”
“So what do you want me to do if you are in my position?”
Zaid was appointed as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of law after the 8 March political tsunami which seen the Barisan Nasional (BN) losing their 2/3 majority in Parliament and losing 5 state governments. His appointment is seen as an attempt by the government to respond to the people’s call for the reform of the judiciary.
However, Zaid resigned last month in protest against the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) against Raja Petra Kamarudin, Teresa Kok and Tan Hoon Cheng. He also stated that he faced hurdles and objections from his fellow colleagues in the Cabinet on his attempts to reform the judiciary.
Then, when asked if he will quit Umno to join another party, he said that he will keep his options open.
